Joseph Kossonogi (1908 – 1981)

When Joseph Kossonogi was a young child, a postcard from a painting by Titian fell into his hands. Kosssonogi began copying it, and a woman who saw the excellent copy decided to buy it in exchange for a watercolor box. From here, the young boy’s path was determined.

He is one of the “Massad” artists’ group, and together with her friends presented in a three-room apartment they rented on Rothschild Boulevard. Among the group’s members are Avigdor Stimatsky ,Aharon Avni, Mordechai Lebanon , Israel Peledi, Zvi Shor and Aryeh Long.

In 1932 Kossonogi joined the Israel Artists Association. In 1935, the group joined the Painters and Sculptors Association in Israel, his works use a soft and modest color, creating a unique atmosphere of lyrical calm in his works. He saw the world as a luminous and romantic place, with festive views, and beautiful women.

He has a lot to do with quiet scenery and shooting, using soft and vague colors to describe the light’s transparency of the country. Safed’s landscapes, Lake Kinneret, Ein Kerem and Jerusalem often appear in these paintings.

In his paintings, Kossonogi usually uses few colors to make his paintings look almost monochromatic, but from these colors he builds many shades and hues that create great wealth.

Another topic heengage in, especially from the mid-1960s, is the subject of music translated into the language of painting. These paintings feature figures playing at the center, and the calm, harmonious music emerges from them in pale greenish-green or yellow-orange colorways scattered in space.

Kossonogi often draws elegant women figures, often in dresses, often with jugs on their heads inspired by the Druze women he met between the Galilee mountains, or with umbrellas in their hands under the influence of the exquisite women in the cities. The figures and houses in his paintings are extended upward, as if trying to rise into the sky.

On his works, Kossonogi said: “Our country is more suited to watercolors than to oil colors.” “I cannot give this transparency in the Israeli landscape, its clear air and atmosphere, but in the watercolor.”
